Kilimanjaro Day 5

We wake up to the clearest of sky’s. You would never know the treacherous weather that we had experienced the night before.

Mawenzi Peak in the back

We leave our campsite and cross the lunar desert of the saddle between Mawenzi Peak and Kibo Hut. Today we are heading to Kibo Hut, otherwise known as basecamp. Basecamp is the final camp before we ascend to the peak of Kilimanjaro. After a couple hours of trekking, we see the summit of Kilimanjaro in the background and our trail to the high camp stretched out before our eyes.

My Freestyle Libre Sensor kept my blood sugar in check.

Although today’s walk is only 5 miles, it seems like forever. These are the longest 6 hours of my life. I feel like a kid on a road trip with my parents asking, “Are we there yet?”. They say “Almost”, but almost never seems to come. I see a tiny green hut in the distance and I get excited, thinking we are almost there but it appears the closer the hut looks, the longer the walk feels. The hut we are seeing is basecamp. Upon reaching our camp the remainder of the day is spent resting in preparation for the final ascent. I'm tired and sleepy, but still confident and determined for the next day. We have an early dinner and go to bed at 6pm.
